Veteran chess player and overseas Filipino worker from UAE, Danny Reyes, has returned home to compete in the 2023 Asian Seniors Chess Championships. The event will take place from October 14 to 22 at the Knights Templar Hotel in Tagaytay City.
This isn’t Reyes’ first stint at the Asian Seniors; he previously showcased his skills in the 2011 tournament held in Damascus, Syria.
Reyes, who holds the title of president of the Abu Dhabi Filipino Organization Chess Enthusiast (ADFORCE), is well-known in the chess circles of the Middle East. He has consistently made his mark in tournaments in Abu Dhabi, Iran, and Oman.
The Tagaytay tournament is not just any ordinary competition. It provides participants an opportunity to achieve Grandmaster title norms and direct International Master titles. The total cash prize stands at an impressive $3,000 (P170,000).
Support for the Asian Seniors is strong, with endorsements coming from local leaders like Tagaytay Mayor Abraham “Bambol” Tolentino Jr., Cavite Vice Governor Athena Bryana Tolentino, and Prospero “Butch” Pichay Jr., the chairman and president of the National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP).
Alex Bautista, owner of Yourtime Watch Repair Services in Makati City, is sponsoring Reyes’ participation. Additional backing comes from retail store Motoluci, known for its motorcycle helmets and branches in Imus, Las Piñas, and Alabang, and Edelyn’s Homemade Nuts, a popular brand from Minalin, Pampanga.
