Over 40 percent of residents and citizens in the UAE have already been vaccinated with at least one shot of the Covid-19 vaccine, the Ministry of Health and Prevention (MoHaP) confirmed on Tuesday.
As earlier announced, the country is eyeing to vaccinate 50 percent of its people by the end of the first quarter of 2021.
They also revealed that nearly 48.6 percent of the elderly have been inoculated with the vaccine against the deadly disease.
Citing the latest data released by the MoHaP, more than 5.19 million doses of the vaccine have been administered and the rate of doses per 100 people is 52.56.
Catching Covid-19 before taking the second vaccine shot
Dr. Farida Al Hosani, MoHaP’s spokesperson, said that those who have been infected with the virus after taking the first vaccine should still take the second dose after their recovery. The final dose is only advised for those who had mild symptoms or remained asymptomatic.
Meanwhile, those who suffered from severe illness and need hospital treatment must consult a doctor before taking their second dose.
“They should visit a doctor after making a full recovery and get an antibody test done and proceed ahead with the vaccine on a doctor’s recommendation,” she said.
While the vaccines that UAE is currently using work differently, Al Hosani said they all trigger the body’s immune system to fight the virus. She added that most of these vaccines–Sinopharm, Pfizer-BioNTech, AstraZeneca, and Sputnik–found to be effective in fighting the virus, she said that nobody knows for how long the immune system to fight the virus.
“Antibodies will become less overtime but the immune system has memory cells and these cells will remember the components of the vaccine if they contract the virus after a long time,” the spokesperson said.
The UAE has so far conducted more than 28 million Covid-19 tests across the country.
