History Has Been Made! Philippine’s First-Ever Gold Medalist Is A Woman

History has been made after Hidilyn Diaz gives the Philippines its first-ever gold medal in the Olympic games with a win in the Women’s 55kg in Tokyo 2020.

Diaz wins ends the near century-long Olympic gold medal drought since the country competed in the games in 1924. So far, the Philippines has since won three silvers and seven bronze.

The Filipina weightlifter won a silver medal in the women’s 53kg in the 2016 Rio Olympics.

In Tokyo, she finished with a total score of 224kg, lifting 97 in the snatch and 127 in the clean, and defeated China’s Liao Qiuyun for the gold.

The first Filipina gold medalist will receive a total of P33.5 million plus a Tagaytay City house and hot. She will also receive P10 million from the government, as per law; P10 million from Manny V. Pangilinan; P10 million from Ramon S. Ang; P3 million from deputy speaker Mikee Romero; and P2.5 million from her hometown Zamboanga City also by law.
