Dubai has very recently unveiled a ‘smart travel’ system that enables travelers to pass through the airport without using their identification papers.
Yesterday, officials from the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs (GDRFA) showed to the press the integrated biometric contactless pathway at Dubai International Airport. The new technology was first announced at GITEX 2019.
Eradicating contact with staff in a post-pandemic world, the airport uses the latest biometric technology--a mix of facial and iris recognition. By simply strolling through the airport, passengers can now check-in for their flight, complete immigration formalities, enter the lounge facilities, and board their flights.
“In the future, we expect immigration terminals will not exist. People will be able to stroll through the airport to complete all formalities. The time taken to complete immigration formalities will solely depend on how fast an individual is able to walk,” Maj. Gen. Mohammed Ahmed Al Marri, Director-General of GDRFA, told Khaleej Times.
So far, eight registration terminals have been set up at the first and business class check-in counters of Emirates Airlines. The same tunnel was also erected near immigration counters at the first and business class departure terminal.
Meanwhile, a total of 122 smart gates in the departure and arrival halls of Dubai Airports have been upgraded so pre-registered passengers can use them without the need for travel documents.
