Rare Quintuplets Born In UAE Hospital Defy The Odds, Now Thriving At Home

Sheikh Shakhbout Medical City (SSMC) in Abu Dhabi, a major healthcare facility under the PureHealth group, has achieved a rare medical milestone by successfully delivering quintuplets from a high-risk pregnancy. This extraordinary case underscores the hospital’s advanced expertise in maternal and neonatal care.

The quintuplets were born at just 25 weeks of gestation, classified as extremely premature. A multidisciplinary team of 45 medical professionals, including neonatologists, obstetricians, and neonatal nurses, carried out the emergency Caesarean section. Despite the complexities, the procedure proceeded smoothly, and the mother experienced no postpartum complications.

Each baby required intensive care at birth due to their low weights, ranging from 588 to 801 grams. SSMC’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) provided advanced interventions, including ventilation and surgeries, to ensure their survival. One of the quintuplets underwent successful surgeries for eye and bowel complications.

Dr. Abdulqader Almessabi, acting chief medical officer at SSMC, highlighted the hospital’s comprehensive approach, saying, “We take pride in offering exceptional care for critical pregnancies and ensuring the best outcomes for both mother and baby.”

The mother began experiencing complications at 22 weeks, prompting close monitoring and preparations. Weekly simulations ensured the delivery was seamless, demonstrating SSMC’s dedication to patient-centred care.

The quintuplets and their mother have since been discharged in good health, with regular follow-ups provided at SSMC’s outpatient clinic.
